Week 11 ~ Progress Report

It’s your wedding cake… should you go for taste or looks?

This is what my facebook friends had to say…

“Taste and Looks are both important…who wants to eat ugly cake…or pretty cake that taste’s bad?”
Another question came up… “I’ve heard fondant does not taste good but makes beautiful cakes?”
“I’m all about taste! Lol, because if it’s something to eat, taste is something more memorable to me any-day!”
“But you don’t have to do fondant :) I would find a balance. If I had to take a little from both to make a good tasting/beautiful cake I would!”
Here is an article on just this subject.

Backyard Wedding… Plan & Organize ~ Week 11

The “cake” center piece of the reception!

Again… as with the flowers that we talked about last week, you probably already have a design or style in mind. And… it will most likely come down to price as to what you will “finally” select. This is not a bad thing at all.  I know it will be beautiful because when you have to problem solve you usually come up with something even better than the original. Ok… so I love problem solving!

To have a professional bakery make your cake, in my town at least, is anywhere from $3.00 per slice up to over $5.00 a slice! Wow… I’m not begrudging those bakers at all. They all seem very busy and they are so talented I’m glad for them. But… in our case we had other options.

My daughter made her own wedding cake and her sisters. Yes, she had taken a few lessons in a high school class, but really, a wedding cake is very involved as she found out.  You can read more about  my daughter Eryn and her wedding cake adventure in my eBook. She did a beautiful job on both wedding cakes and has gone on to make many more, all because she was willing to step out and use her talent.

So… do you know of someone who is just waiting for the chance to create a wedding cake? Granted this is a big undertaking and it will need to be just the right person. You could supply everything, which by the way, will cost anywhere from $75.00 – $100.00 for 150 guests and that’s if you already have the bake-ware. Someone might just see this as a wedding gift too.

I would love to be able to share what and how you handled the wedding cake category. Feel free to contact me with pictures and details so I can share your story and give others ideas.

See you Friday for our Progress Report where we get to hear from my facebook friends about wedding cakes.

Week 12 ~ Progress Report

What’s the most important thing to consider when choosing the “wedding party” flowers?

This is what my facebook friends had to say…

“What can I afford and make look beautiful”
“How long they will look fresh. Mine wilted too soon.”
“Color and style!”
“What is the look you are going for with the rest of the wedding….you want to be
consistent.”
Bride Quote ~
“Flowers are done – check! The florist experience was wonderful and exactly how I hoped it would go. We were a little late showing up to her shop, but once we got there we were ushered into a side room with a small table that was covered with magazines and books galore. With the florist and my mother by my side, we went through many books, selecting flowers and gathering ideas for the perfect bouquets.

Jennifer from Garden Spot Floral,  was great at listening to my ideas and trying her hardest to make them a reality. I wanted very natural, flowing arrangements of flowers for me and the girls. I also wanted to stay away from roses.  And… for the bridesmaids, I only wanted one color in their bouquets – all green. Jennifer thought that was an interesting and fun idea and showed me tons of green flowers that matched exactly what I had imagined.”

Backyard Wedding… Plan & Organize ~ Week 12

This week I’d like to touch on the Wedding Flowers.

Wedding Flowers ~

When your wedding is outside in your backyard you probably wont need to do much decorating with flowers from the florist. Outside is so beautiful all on it’s own.

You might want to use some flowers from the florist in your center pieces, or on your food and  guest sign-in table. However, it might be fun to use flowers right from the flower bed for these extra “pretties”. The choice is up to you, just know the florist bill will go up a lot for this extra.

How do you know what flowers to choose for the wedding party? I personally “do not” know a bride who doesn’t know what she wants for her wedding flowers! It basically comes down to price (can you afford your choice) and availability of the choice.

A good florist will try very hard to work with-in your budget and help you to “have” what you want or at least find something comparable that you will like just as well. Your florist will also be a great help in selecting a color scheme and shades of colors that will make things “pop” in the beautiful department!

Last but not least…make sure you have a list of everyone that will get flowers (making a list and checking it twice). Will there be grandparents that need flowers, will you need extra for the flower girl, how about your wedding cake? One of my daughters cakes had real red roses on it.

If in doubt… ask your florist. They do weddings all the time and will have great suggestions. And… don’t be afraid to do the flowers on your own if that floats your boat, goodness if you are talented in this area go for it. I’m all for using your talents. That’s why a DIY wedding can be so fun!

See you Friday for our Progress Report where I have some “flower” comments from my facebook friends!
